Review: Greta Van Fleet’s Anthem of the Peaceful Army

If you haven’t heard of them already, the rock band Greta Van Fleet has recently started to make their presence known in the music industry, and it won’t be much longer until they’re a part of your daily rock rotation. Greta Van Fleet has successfully resurrected the classic 70’s blues/rock sound that seemed to have been done away with long ago. Lead singer Josh Kiszka echoes sounds of Robert Plant, lead vocalist for legendary rock group Led Zeppelin, as well as Geddy Lee from the Canadian rock group Rush. Originating in Frankenmuth, Michigan, Greta Van Fleet consists of three brothers, with Josh Kiszka as the lead vocalist, Sam Kiszka on the bass, lead guitarist Jake Kiszka, and finally Danny Wagner on the drums. Anthem of the Peaceful Army was released on October 19, 2018, making it their second studio album to be released by Greta Van Fleet of Republic Records since the formation of the band back in 2012. The album consists of eleven wholehearted tracks spanning the course of 49 minutes.

“In an age of darkness light appears
And it wards away the ancient fears
March to the anthem of the heart
To a brand new day, a brand new start”

In the very first verse from “Age of Man”, the first song on their new album, Greta Van Fleet makes a strong statement, one that says “Rock is back, and it’s not going anywhere.” From beginning to end Anthem of the Peaceful Army reminds you of why so many people are jumping on the bandwagon and comparing Greta Van Fleet to some of the all-time great classic rock groups. With powerful riffs combined with wailing vocals in “When the Curtain Falls”, as well as awe-inspiring acoustics on tracks such as “You’re the one” and “The New Day”, it’s easy to understand why these comparisons are being made so early in the band’s career. Anthem of the Peaceful Army is a perfect example of the variety that Greta Van Fleet brings to the table and why this group will leave their mark on the music industry for years to come. Whether you’re a classic rock fan looking for someone new to spark the resurgence of that sound or whether you’re new to rock music and looking for the next big thing, Greta Van Fleet is your group.

The band is currently on tour in The U.K. and will be playing shows in London, Birmingham, and Manchester. Greta Van Fleet will return to The U.S. later this month for performances in New York City, Chicago, Detroit, and Seattle before heading back overseas. For those who can’t make it to those cities and are hoping to catch the band live in action, there’s no need to panic, as the band will be returning in April for their North American Tour.
