Happy New Year!
You may not have heard of them yet but, Flight Paths will be making a splash in the rock scene with their new EP, The Secret, released on Oct. 26, 2018. Flight Paths is a two man band made of of drummer John Whittaker and Dan Whittaker, who sings and plays everything else.
Although the band is new, this is not the first venture for the members. Dan Whittaker was the guitarist and vocalist for Living In Fiction.
The album starts off with “Give and Take”. It comes in soft with just guitar and vocals in the intro with the drums coming in about halfway through the verse. Halfway through the second verse, Dan starts screaming and keeps the crunch in his voice throughout the chorus. He screams in certain places to add emphasis to lyrics throughout the rest of the song.
The next song “False Disguise” is similar to “Give and Take” in that it doesn’t use a lot of screaming but just enough to emphasize certain lyrics. The lyrics in this song are powerful. They speak about how his own personal demons are wearing disguises.
“Some Other Way” comes in with an acoustic guitar playing chords on every beat and soft vocals but halfway through the first verse Dan screams and John comes in with heavier drums. This song does a good job balancing screams and distorted guitar with the softer acoustic guitar sections. The only time that sounded off was the second pre-chorus. The pre-chorus after the first verse was heavy with screaming and distorted guitar but the second pre-chorus had just the drums and the acoustic guitar playing on the off beats. It doesn’t sound bad, it just messed with the flow of the song.
“Piece by Broken Piece” is one of the more emotional tracks on this album. Two extreme examples of that are “A liar is worse than a thief.”, in the first verse, and “Gone without a trace, you are my worst mistake.”, in the chorus.
The Secret closes with “White Flags”, a soft acoustic song. It’s an appropriate song to end on. It’s softer than the previous tracks and gives it more of a structured end than if they would have just stopped on a heavier song. I hope that by having a song about waving the white flag doesn’t mean that this will be the end of them!
Overall, I believe this EP was able to give a good view of Flight Paths’s sound and their potential. It showcased their songwriting ability and musical talent. If you want to listen to them, you can find the album on Spotify and if you like what you hear, you can buy The Secret on Amazon. Follow them at @flightpathsofficial.
I give The Secret a 9/10
