Matt Pike’s Medical Emergency Causes High on Fire to Pull Out of Upcoming Tour

Earlier this week on Monday, High on Fire announced that the band will be cancelling their Electric Messiah Tour. The tour was set to kick off in Atlanta, GA on January 10th and hit other major cities such as Philadelphia, Baltimore, and New York City. Unfortunately, High on Fire will not be able to follow through on the upcoming tour due to a medical emergency involving frontman Matt Pike. High on Fire just released their latest studio album, Electric Messiah, back in November and was intended to be the majority of the set list for the upcoming tour. You can read the Electric Messiah album review here.

As many fans already know, Matt Pike has been dealing with complications with his foot due to diabetes. A few months back, he was forced to undergo partial amputation of one of his toes in order to manage his disease and was in the recovery process to prepare for the upcoming tour. Sadly, Matt’s recovery did not go as planned and is said to be preparing to undergo a full amputation of his big toe. Matt issued this statement on Monday:

“Dear Friends and fans, To my brothers, my crew, and anyone else this affects. I do apologize for the inconvenience of this cancellation. I feel as though I’m explaining lightning striking twice. I wanted nothing more in the world to play these songs live, nor ever cancel something I say I’m gonna do.”

“I am a warrior for our art, and have endured some painful things to do what we do. The timing and repeating nature of this is my nightmare and almost impossible. Nevertheless, to save yet another toe, my big one, I have been grounded by circumstances out of my control. I will have more of a medical report to come but right now I’m at great risk of losing it, and/or a bigger portion of my foot due to Diabetes. Which I have been managing very well.”

“It just shows how this disease can affect our lives. Please forgive me, and if you know anything about me, you know this is not like me. We will be back!”

With Matt Pike’s health, a big question for fans everywhere is if High on Fire will truly make their way around for another tour anytime soon, if at all.  We can only hope that his statement is true so that fans can have the chance to see Matt and the rest of High on Fire live before they decide to call it quits. All we can do is keep Matt in our thoughts and hope that his health is improved so that he can continue to do what he does best.
