Get Ready For A ‘Love Like Fiction’

Recently, I was introduced to Love Like Fiction, a band that is a perfect blend of pop punk, emo and alternative with a bit of hardcore thrown in. Love Like Fiction is based in Phoenix, Ariz. The band includes Tara Goltz on drums, Marin Bridges on guitar, Frankie Stapley on guitar and vocals, Paul Ritchie on bass and Nick Barker on lead vocals. I had the opportunity to speak with Nick about the band, their music, what they are up to now and their plans for the future.

Love Like Fiction was started by Tara and Marin. The lineup was finalized Summer 2018 but before that Nick said that Tara and Marin were “constantly looking for members, trying out a bunch of different people.” First they found Frankie but he had to leave the band for a little while then Tara put a post on Facebook and that is how Nick and Paul joined the band. “It just so happened that Paul and I had just gotten out of a band and we were looking for a creative outlet,” Nick said. “We all just clicked really well musically and personally. The rest is history.”

The name Love Like Fiction came from the idea that people wish they had a love like in romance novels or movies, so in other words, a Love Like Fiction.

One of the things that gives Love Like Fiction their unique sound is that each band member is influenced by different genres and artists. For example, “Tara is really involved in pop and some indie stuff”, Nick said. “As far as I go, I’m pop punk through and through. I live and breathe Panic! At The Disco, Fall Out Boy, bands like that.” Paul is heavily influence by ska while Marin and Frankie have a wide variety of tastes that don’t fit into just one style of music.

All of these different influences make it difficult to set them into just one genre. “I think classifying yourself as just one thing is pretty difficult, especially in music. The best ways that I can describe it is pop punk, emo or alternative,” Nick said when describing Love Like Fiction‘s sound. “A lot of it just comes to us trying to challenge ourselves.”

One of their singles out now, “Let’s Call It Closure”, has a very unique theme with upbeat, happy music but the lyrics are about a breakup. “We were trying to look at the dichotomy of a breakup. When you break up there’s a lot of happy emotions that you had or memories that you’re letting go of so there’s pain with some good memories mixed in there. So it’s a weird mixture of the two, happiness and sadness,” Nick said when describing “Let’s Call It Closure”.

The other single they have out right now, “Bilingual? Baby, I’m Bipolar”, comes from a very personal place for Nick. He has bipolar disorder and he said, “that song is a lot about struggling with the illness.” Regarding the name, “it’s supposed to be a goofy name about a serious topic,” Nick said. He said that many people get confused about the lyrics “without me there is no you” and think that he is referencing the crowd but he said that it’s really “the personification of my mental illness and that I cannot survive without it, that without it, there is no me. So really, it’s my bipolar disorder telling me, ‘Hey you need me around’, which is sort of a struggle and obviously not true. I wanted to let people know that that’s not necessarily the case.”

They recently played a show June 1 at Pub Rock Live in Scottsdale, Ariz. If you missed that one and you are in the Phoenix, Ariz. area, don’t worry because they will be playing at The Trunk Space on June 29 at 6:30pm.

Currently, Love Like Fiction is in the studio recording an EP. They will be in the studio through July and should have it out soon after that. We will be sure to let you know when it is released.

In addition to the EP, Nick said that they have some big plans going on this fall so check their social media to make sure you don’t miss it. They are also thinking about putting on a small tour soon.

After my conversation with Nick, I am even more convinced that more people should check out Love Like Fiction. They have their two singles on their YouTube page so listen and let us know what you think!
